It was both inspiring and insightful to attend DI’s event on “The Role of the Transport Industry in Times of Crisis”, where we had the opportunity to see our everyday work through the government’s eyes.
The event reminded us of the crucial role the transport industry played during the COVID-19 crisis: While much of society came to a standstill, drivers waited in long queues at borders to ensure that food and goods continued to reach everyone, and that shelves remained stocked. It was a moment when society truly recognized how critical our industry is.
Today, we face new challenges and a more complex security situation. One thing is certain: should a crisis strike again, the role of transport will be unquestionable.
This makes it even more important that we focus on how we can jointly solve the challenges of the future—both in terms of cybersecurity, which is already an integral part of our daily operations, and the critical shortage of drivers, a challenge all transporters are experiencing across the EU.
As part of society’s backbone, we need frameworks from European countries that support—not hinder—our ability to secure society’s critical functions. By working together, being proactive, and embracing innovation, we can ensure that society remains secure, essential goods are stocked, and basic needs are met—today and for generations to come.
